“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Romans 1:16
There is much power in the world today. There has been much power that man has displayed down thru the ages. When one thinks of power, we think of physical might, mental capability, energy- the ability to produce an affect.
On June 6, 1933, the first concrete was poured in the building of Hoover Dam. On May 29, 1935, the last concrete was poured. Twenty-one thousand men were used in the construction of the dam. It took 4.36 million cubic yards of concrete for this huge undertaking. It has been estimated that you could pave a road sixteen feet wide that would run from San Francisco to New York City with that amount of concrete. One can’t imagine the power and might of the men who physically built such a wondrous marvel. It is hard to comprehend the mental work that went into designing and planning such a huge undertaking. What was the reason for building such thing? To generate electricity- essentially power. I don’t deny such power. But there is no power, like the power of God unto salvation! Man’s power is feeble and fleeting at best. We can build and design a dam, but we cannot keep ourselves from being damned. When it comes to the saving of one’s soul, man’s power is of no use at all. I want us to consider three wonderful truths about the Gospel.
I. The Person of the Gospel- Luke 19:10 says, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” John 10:9 “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.” John 11:25 “I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the Father, but by me.” The Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ is the person of the Gospel! “The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29b).
II. The Power of the Gospel- It is the power of God resulting in salvation to the one who believes. The Gospel can change a sinner into a saint; it transforms; it moves one from darkness to light; from death to life. How could we ever be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ? Paul wrote to the believers at Ephesus, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). It isn’t that the lost are simply in trouble because of their sin, it is a Bible truth that they are spiritually dead. Before I was saved - yes physically I was alive -there was a beat in my heart and air in my lungs - I had a job, kept a home, paid my bills and by the world’s standards, I was alive and doing well. According to God’s Word, I was as dead as dead could be. But my friend, the power of God, thru the blood shed of the Lord Jesus, washed me, cleansed me, saved me, bought me, redeemed me, and reconciled me. That is true Power!
III. The Provision of the Gospel- It is for whosoever. The Bible says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13.) It is for the rich, the poor, the wise, the unwise, the civilized and the cultured, the rough and the rude. It includes those on Main Street as well as those on the backstreet. It doesn’t leave out those with a white collar, blue collar or no collar. The bottom line is that all have sinned. Paul teaches us in Romans 3:9 that all are under sin. That means they are a slave to it, they are subjugated to it. They don’t just sin-they sin and enjoy it. God has made available to whosoever the provision to be saved if they come by way of His Son Jesus Christ.
The Gospel is the mercy of God in motion, the grace of God revealed and the power of God unto salvation.
