Andrew Murray wrote these words many years ago and they still speak to us today, “Giving up one’s whole life to Him, for Him alone to rule and order it; taking up His yoke and submitting to be led and taught, to learn of Him; abiding in Him, to be and do only what He wills, These are the conditions of discipleship….” If I may add, such a life that Andrew Murray spoke of so long ago, is the best life that one can live. To give one’s self completely and totally over to God, to abide in Christ Jesus is the best place to be and the best plan to follow. Let’s define what it means to abide: To stay, dwell, endure, remain, stand, tarry. The Bible teaches us that we are not our own, we have been bought with a price (I Corinthians 6:19-20.) I once heard a preacher describe the price that was paid by Christ with these words, “By the Gold of His blood and the Silver of His tears Christ redeemed us.” Why should we abide in Him, because we are His and His plan is the best plan for us.
The evidence of one abiding in Christ will be the fruit that will surely be on display. Galatians 5:22-23 paints a picture of Christian Character as one abides, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” What a wonderful life awaits those who follow and fellowship whole heartedly with the Lord Jesus Christ. Because without Him we can do nothing, but thru Him all things are possible as we abide in Him. It is the best life ever.
